Description
FROM founder of the CLIMAX BLUES BAND to his work on blockbuster film scores, PETE HAYCOCK was a master of blues-rock guitar and arguably one of the best slide guitar players to have emerged from Britain. To this day, his legacy is greatly admired around the world. With his roots firmly embedded in the British blues boom of the 1960s, as the young guitarist fronting the Climax Blues Band, Pete was a consistent, pivotal and leading element in the band’s brand of tight, psychedelic and jazz-drenched blues. Yet he held a deep understanding of, and empathy for, blues music in its many forms and played with an astonishing versatility.
Throughout the 1970s Pete toured Europe and North America extensively with Climax, playing alongside blues stalwarts such as Son House, Champion Jack Dupree, Albert King, B.B. King and Albert Collins, as well as stadium-filling blues and rock acts such as Steve Miller, Johnny Winter, Lynryd Skynryd, ZZ Top, Bad Company, Wishbone Ash, Fleetwood Mac, Peter Frampton and Aerosmith. He enjoyed Transatlantic success with the hit single ‘Couldn’t Get it Right’ and became known for his distinctive ‘gold plated’ Veleno guitar.
His later career saw him embark upon a wide range of projects with diverse musical styles, working with the Electric Light Orchestra Part II and the acclaimed composer Hans Zimmer, for whom he played guitar on the film scores for classic movies such as Thelma & Louise and Driving Miss Daisy. He also worked with Miles Copeland, Gary Numan, Jan Akkerman, Chicken Shack and various rock, folk and blues acts.
Sometimes underrated and often overlooked, this is the story of one of Britain’s finest blues musicians.
